Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know about how Free Baking Calculator works, what it costs, and where your data goes.

What is Free Baking Calculator?

Free Baking Calculator is a set of web-based tools for home bakers and small bakery owners. It covers two jobs: costing and pricing your baking (recipe cost, cake pricing, profit margin) and converting measurements accurately (cups to grams, temperatures, and more). Everything runs in your browser, and the tools share data so you don't retype ingredient prices between calculators.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every calculator on the site is fully usable with no sign-up, no paywall, and no course upsell. There is no free trial that expires and no feature locked behind a subscription.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required for any calculator. The site does not have a login system at all. Any ingredient prices or settings you enter are saved locally in your browser, not tied to an account.

Where is my data stored?

Anything you type into a calculator, such as ingredient prices in your "pantry," is stored only in your browser's local storage on your own device. It is never sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data will clear your saved entries. See our privacy policy for details.

How does the Recipe Cost Calculator work?

You list each ingredient in a recipe along with how much you paid and how much you bought, and the calculator works out the cost of the exact amount used in that recipe. Add up every ingredient and you get a total recipe cost, plus a cost per serving or per unit if you tell it the yield.

How is the Cake Pricing Calculator different from the Recipe Cost Calculator?

The Recipe Cost Calculator tells you what a recipe costs to make. The Cake Pricing Calculator takes that a step further by adding labor time, overhead (electricity, rent share, packaging, and so on), and your target profit margin to suggest a selling price that actually protects your margin, not just covers your ingredients.

What is the difference between profit margin and markup?

Margin is profit measured as a share of your selling price. Markup is profit measured as a share of your cost. A 50% margin and a 50% markup are not the same number, and mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes small bakeries make. Our Cake Pricing Calculator works in margin by default because it is the number that tells you what share of every sale is actual profit, and shows the markup-equivalent alongside it for reference.

Why do cups-to-grams conversions vary by ingredient?

Different ingredients pack into a measuring cup differently. A cup of flour, a cup of sugar, and a cup of cocoa powder all weigh different amounts because their density is different. Generic conversion charts that use one number for every ingredient are usually wrong. Our Cups to Grams Converter uses ingredient-specific density data so the gram amount actually matches what is in your bowl.

Can I use these calculators on my phone?

Yes. The site is built to work on phones, tablets, and desktops, so you can use it in the kitchen while measuring or costing out an order on the go.

Do I need to be a professional baker to use this?

No. Home bakers use the conversion tools to get recipes right, and anyone selling baked goods on the side or running a small bakery uses the pricing tools to make sure they are charging enough. You do not need any background in accounting or food science to use them.

How many calculators does the site have, and are they all free?

Ten tools are live today: Recipe Cost Calculator, Cake Pricing Calculator, Profit Margin Calculator, Recipe Scaling Tool, Business Planning Resources, Bakery Management Tools, Cups to Grams Converter, Baker's Percentage Calculator, Temperature Converter, Ingredient Weight Calculator, and Baking Reference Guides. Every one of them is fully usable for free, with no sign-up.

What does the Profit Margin Calculator do that the Cake Pricing Calculator doesn't?

The Cake Pricing Calculator is built specifically for cake and order pricing, with labor, packaging, delivery, and overhead fields baked in. The Profit Margin Calculator is a simpler, general-purpose tool for any product: enter a cost and a selling price to see margin and markup instantly, or work backwards from a target margin to a price.

How does the Recipe Scaling Tool work?

List each ingredient with its original quantity and unit, then enter your recipe's original yield and the new yield you need. Every ingredient is multiplied by the same scale factor automatically, so a recipe scales up or down without anyone doing the ratio math by hand.

What is the Bakery Management Tools order tracker?

It's a lightweight order tracker for small bakery workflows: add a customer, item, due date, price, and status, and see everything sorted with a due-soon summary. Like every other tool on the site, orders are saved only in your browser's local storage, not sent to a server or tied to an account.

Does the site have a temperature converter for ovens?

Yes. The Temperature Converter converts between Fahrenheit and Celsius instantly and shows the nearest UK gas mark, plus a reference table of the oven temperatures most recipes call for.

Is there a chart for pan sizes and ingredient substitutions?

Yes, the Baking Reference Guides page covers ingredient substitutions, pan size and volume equivalents, an oven temperature chart, a measurement conversion chart, and an egg size reference, all on one page.

Can I request a new calculator or report a problem?

Yes, please do. Reach out through our contact page with a tool request or an issue you have run into, and it goes directly to the team building the site.

How much does a baking calculator cost?

Free Baking Calculator is completely free to use, with no hidden pricing tiers. Every calculator, including the ones for pricing cakes and costing recipes, is fully unlocked with no sign-up and no subscription.

Is there a baking calculator made specifically for cakes?

Yes. The Cake Pricing Calculator is built around how cakes are actually sold: it factors in ingredient cost, decorating and labor time, overhead, and your target profit margin to suggest a price per cake, not just a per-ingredient cost.

Is this really a free baking cost calculator, with no catch?

Yes. The Recipe Cost Calculator adds up exactly what a recipe costs to make, including cost per serving, and it's free with no paywall, no trial period, and no premium tier to unlock the full result.

Does the baking calculator convert cups to grams?

Yes. The Cups to Grams Converter uses ingredient-specific density data, so a cup of flour, a cup of sugar, and a cup of cocoa powder each convert to the correct gram weight instead of one generic number applied to every ingredient.

Can I use a baking calculator for pricing my baked goods?

Yes. Enter your ingredient costs once in the Recipe Cost Calculator, then use the Cake Pricing Calculator to layer on labor, overhead, and margin so the price you charge actually covers your time, not just your groceries.

Is there an ingredients calculator for cakes?

Yes, the Recipe Cost Calculator works as an ingredients calculator for cakes: list each ingredient with its price and package size, and it works out the exact cost of the amount used, then totals the full recipe cost.

How do I price a cake so I actually make a profit?

Cost your ingredients first, then add labor time, overhead like packaging and utilities, and a target profit margin, not just a markup guess. The Cake Pricing Calculator does this math for you and shows the margin percentage behind the final price.

What is a baker's percentage and do I need it?

Baker's percentage expresses every ingredient as a percentage of the total flour weight, which makes recipes easy to scale up or down. It's most useful for bread and larger production runs. Use the Baker's Percentage Calculator on this site to work it out for your own recipe.
